Katie's Birth Story

Katie, 32, Bournemouth, United Kingdom

First child

I woke up at 7:30 on the morning of my expected due date and I was already having regular contractions. I had a lovely relaxing morning at home and a warm shower and was coping really well with the contractions. At around 1:30 pm I started to bleed so I went to the maternity unit to be checked over. I arrived there at 2:45 pm. When examined my cervix was still closed.

They were happy to send me back home, but whilst they were getting my notes ready, my waters broke and my contractions went to 2 minutes apart.

Suddenly I was ready to push!!!

I was examined again and sure enough, I was fully dilated and ready to push.

There were moments during my labour where the midwife wanted to intervene. They were worried that babies heart rate was dropping and my contractions slowed down. I was absolutely determined that I was giving birth to my baby naturally and without any assistance or intervention so I remained calm and focused and blocked out their worries.

Baby girls body was pushed out with no contraction as my contractions totally stopped.

I had an active labour, all my favourite music playing, and very little input from the midwife. I had aromatherapy oils to keep me relaxed and was totally calm throughout.

At 5:45 pm my baby girl arrived with no complications. My established labour was just 1 hour 56 minutes and I managed to give birth with no pain relief at all. We had lots of skin to skin and my baby girl latched herself on and fed almost immediately after her birth.

I would do it all again tomorrow!
